The 12th Can

Did you know Texas A&M has its own food pantry?

At our Dallas County Aggie Moms November General Meeting, we spent time learning about an incredible student-led resource that many families don’t even realize exists: The 12th Can, Texas A&M’s on-campus food pantry. It serves students, staff, and faculty who may be experiencing food insecurity, offering a reliable and welcoming place to receive support.

The 12th Can opened in November 2013 and has been run entirely by students ever since. Their mission is simple but vital — to make sure that no member of the Aggie community goes hungry. In 2023 alone, the pantry served more than 5,280 clients, which speaks volumes about both the need and the impact this organization has on campus. It was eye-opening to hear just how many Aggies rely on this service and how grateful they are for the help it provides.

The pantry operates during scheduled opening weeks, and students can sign up online the Friday before each week begins. Even if someone doesn’t sign up ahead of time, walk-in pre-packaged bags are available, ensuring immediate access to essentials. Donations—both monetary and food—are always welcome, and the pantry makes it easy to give in a way that directly helps students in need.

As Aggie Moms and families, we have a real opportunity to support this effort. One of the most helpful things we can do is simply spread the word so our students know this resource is available and feel comfortable using it. We can also rally together to organize food drives, contribute financially, or coordinate volunteer initiatives that bolster the pantry’s work. Because The 12th Can is entirely student-led, outside support can make a meaningful difference in keeping shelves full and operations running smoothly.

The heart of this program truly embodies the Aggie Spirit—looking out for one another and lifting each other up. We left the meeting feeling inspired, grateful, and motivated to share this message with the broader Aggie community. If you’re interested in helping us promote or support The 12th Can, let me know. Together, we can ensure that every Aggie has access to the resources they need to thrive.
